The Consumer Price Index CPI, which tracks changes in the prices of many different goods and services, increased 0.6% for the month and 3.7% annually, slightly above forecasts from economists. The core CPI climbed by 0.3% and 4.3%, excluding volatile food and energy costs. The Federal Reserve focuses on core inflation to gain longterm insights. An important factor was the 5.6% monthly increase in energy expenditures. While used car prices fell, housing costs also increased.
