In response to a significant data breach affecting 25 million users at SK Telecom, the largest mobile carrier in South Korea, SK Group Chairman Chey Taewon has issued a public apology. SK Telecom offered free USIM card replacements to prevent identity theft following the breach, which was attributed to a malware attack discovered on 18 April. In addition to promising a thorough cybersecurity investigation alongside external experts, Chey acknowledged the security oversight. He emphasised that data security, not merely IT security, should be regarded as a matter of national defence. Furthermore, SK Telecom has encouraged users to sign up for its USIM Protection Service, which provides the same level of protection as new cards.
