According to research from the CISPA Helmholtz Centre, tHead Semiconductor, an Alibaba subsidiary, has RISCV processors that have serious security vulnerabilities. GhostWrite, the most severe vulnerability, impacts specific CPU cores, giving malicious apps the ability to read, write, and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges, thus seizing complete control of the device. Memory protection techniques are circumvented by this vulnerability caused by flawed instructions in the CPUs vector extension. Performance will be significantly impacted, but the only solution is to turn off the vector extension. To stop such vulnerabilities from being exploited, our findings—which will be presented at the Black Hat conference—highlight the necessity of improved security measures in RISCV installation.
