GPS Spoofing Attacks Mislead Aircraft, Increasing Near Conflict Zones

Cybersecurity experts alert us to a marked increase in GPS "spoofing" assaults, which may fool planes about their whereabouts and interfere with onboard equipment. OPSGROUP notes a 400% rise in occurrences, particularly near conflict areas. False GPS data is transmitted by groundbased devices, which also confuse drones, missiles, and commercial aeroplanes. GPS spoofing delivers phoney signals that seriously complicate matters and lead to navigation mistakes without causing crashes. Cybersecurity expert Ken Munro cited instances in which spoofing changed airline clocks, interfering with secure connections. For example, in April, spoofing attacks claimed on nearby Russia forced Finnair to suspend flights to Tartu, Estonia. These assaults bring minute mistakes that have the potential to compound, increasing aviation danger. Read More..

Researchers have discovered a phishing attempt that uses abbreviated URLs created by WhatsApp and Google Drawings to avoid detection. The first step in the assault is a phishing email that poses as an Amazon verification link and directs recipients to a Google Drawings image. By using trusted services, this technique gets over security filters. Links in the image direct viewers to a phoney Amazon login page—a site created to obtain login credentials and private data—via URL shorteners. Victims are sent to an authentic Amazon login page once their information has been obtained. Researchers have also found a weakness in Microsoft 365s antiphishing defences users are more vulnerable to phishing attempts when security warnings are hidden using CSS tactics. Microsoft has not yet resolved this problem. Read More..

According to research from the CISPA Helmholtz Centre, tHead Semiconductor, an Alibaba subsidiary, has RISCV processors that have serious security vulnerabilities. GhostWrite, the most severe vulnerability, impacts specific CPU cores, giving malicious apps the ability to read, write, and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges, thus seizing complete control of the device. Memory protection techniques are circumvented by this vulnerability caused by flawed instructions in the CPUs vector extension. Performance will be significantly impacted, but the only solution is to turn off the vector extension. To stop such vulnerabilities from being exploited, our findings—which will be presented at the Black Hat conference—highlight the necessity of improved security measures in RISCV installation. Concerning smartphones with Qualcomm and MediaTek chipsets, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team CERTIn has alerted Android users about "highrisk" vulnerabilities impacting Android versions 12, 12L, 13, and 14. These flaws, which may be found in the kernel, system, framework, and other components, might provide attackers with elevated privileges and access to private data. The Framework components most serious issue creates a possibility of privilege escalation. It is suggested that users allow autoupdates and update their devices to the most recent version of Android. A severe warning involving many vulnerabilities that might result in data breaches, unauthorised code execution, security bypasses, denialofservice attacks, and spoofing has also been released by CERTIn for users of Apple products. Users must ensure the newest software updates are installed on their Apple devices. Read More..

On Thursday, Nokia and Swisscom announced their partnership to use 300 drones to improve infrastructure inspection and emergency response throughout Switzerland. Clients, including public safety organisations, can request drone flights using this "DronesasaService" DaaS model without owning or operating the drones themselves. Drones of this type may be used to remotely examine electricity lines, solar panels, and oil and gas infrastructure and to gather data for Swiss public safety authorities such as police and fire departments. The corporations will comply with aviation, spectrum, and data security standards despite safety, noise, and monitoring worries. There is a $32 billion to $35 billion market valuation for industrial drones worldwide. Read More..
