Google introduced its AI Overview feature to the public during Google I/O 2024. This feature replaces standard search results with summaries created by AI. Users have reported dubious and occasionally harmful summaries, such as recommending eating pebbles or looking at the sun, in response to the Search Generative Experience first introduced in the US. The results have been mixed. Google has had similar problems before in February, for example, it had to suspend an imagegenerating function for its AI chatbot because of errors. Although it admits to having issues, Google says these are uncommon. A Google representative told Business Insider that while most AI Overviews offer highquality information, faulty summaries frequently contain unusual or manipulated questions.
