The UNCTAD report Commodities at a Glance Special Issue on Access to Energy in SubSaharan Africa, released on March 21, warns that if no additional efforts are made, the regions population without access to clean fuels could grow from 923 million in 2020 to over 1.1 billion in 2030. This is due to a lack of grids that distribute electricity to consumers, insufficient generation capacity, poor transmission and distribution to users, high connection fees, unpredictable income flows, and high tariffs, as well as low demand combined with ageing plants and insufficient infrastructure funding. UNCTAD urges governments to step up efforts to expand energy access in order to achieve universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030. Read More..
