By 2025, around 14% of global mobile network connections will be over 5G technology, with only 7% in Latin America. This is because operators have focused on migrating 2G and 3G customers to 4G networks. Much of the 5G rollout will depend on investment in infrastructure and new equipment to support increased demand. According to McKinseys analysis, 5G will improve network performance by at least 10 times in Advanced Mobile Broadband EMBB, Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication URLLC, and Mass Communication Machine Type MMTC. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ACCC has taken action against Telstra for spectrum hoarding. Previously, the 900MHz spectrum was used to prevent Optus from rolling out 5G networks. Telstra has agreed to remove the barrier those registrations impose on Optus, allowing more Australians to access 5G services. Telstra has agreed to an undertaking with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ACCC over its registration of 315 radio communications sites in the 900 MHz band, which it knew was crucial to Optus 5G rollout plan. The ACCC says that Telstras registration of these sites had the substantial purpose or likely effect of preventing or hindering Optus from deploying its 5G network. Optus secured all of the 900MHz spectrum offered through the ACMAs spectrum auction in 2021, but Telstra applied for the remaining 315 sites.
