The Bureau of Meteorology has bought a new $49.3 million supercomputer from Hewlett Packard Enterprise HPE to supplement its existing Cray XC40 supercomputer. BOM began using the Cray in June 2016 to improve its weather modeling capability compared to a former Oracle/Sunbased HPC system. A midterm upgrade of the hardware will double the computing and storage capacity of the bureaus existing HPC by 2020. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has awarded Hewlett Packard Enterprise a contract to continue to support its HighPerformance Computing HPC system, Australis, until the end of June 2025.
