There is a danger because of a severe vulnerability in the Windows afd.sys driver that could allow attackers to escalate privileges and run arbitrary code. Exodus Intelligences security specialists have examined the vulnerability and found that the Lazarus Group has exploited it to distribute the advanced malware FudModule. Due to a race issue in the Registered I/O extension of Windows sockets, this vulnerability allows attackers to alter released buffer structures, facilitating privilege escalation. According to the researchers, the vulnerability can be exploited to change essential system structures and gain elevated privileges through a multistage attack method that includes heap spraying. With the publication of a proofofconcept, the threat level to the exploit has increased. Users are advised to update immediately once Microsoft fixed this issue in August 2024. Read More..
