Microplastics have been discovered in the water, air, and sediment of the Antarctic by a research trip. Each and every sample had some level of microplastic contamination. By far the most common, with a presence in 60% of samples, were polyester fibres. Fragments of nylon, polypropylene, and acrylic were found to make up the majority of the other contaminants. The majority of microplastics seem to have arrived from South America. The expeditions results cast doubt on the conventional wisdom that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current shields the majority of Antarctica from pollution affecting other oceans. This week, representatives from more than 150 governments will gather to draught a global, legally binding document on plastic pollution. Read More..

The Peruvian city of Moyobamba is well known for its innovative naturebased solution NbS project, which involves charging residents for water and using the money to finance conservation efforts to protect the areas water resources. In order to address concerns with water scarcity, such as those in Moyobamba, the Environment Ministry of Peru and other environmental organisations have been striving to scale up NbS throughout the nation. Water utilities inclusion in the NbS plans, as recommended by the World Resources Institute for the success of scaled NbS efforts, has contributed to Moyobambas success. Although NbS programmes have drawn criticism for failing to address the primary causes of climate change, project developers in Peru contend that this need not be the case.
