A report examined 13 of the worlds flagship carbon capture and storage projects and found more than half of them underperformed. The Gorgon project off WA Australias only operating CCS system underperformed by about 50% over its first fiveyear period. Carbon capture has been used since the last century by oil and gas producers for enhanced oil recovery EOR by pumping them into pressurized coal beds.EOR projects use almost threequarters 73 % of the carbon captured each year. Carbon capture might have a role to play for hardtoabate cement, fertilizers, and steelmaking, but he recommended safeguards.
