Polar Night Energy and Vatajankoski have created the worlds first functional sand battery. Sustainable, lowcost, lowpollution energy storage. It works by passing hot air through a sand tank, transforming renewable electricity into hot air. Heat is transferred from the air to the sand, reaching about 500 to 600 degrees Celsius. The Kankaanpää battery is 4 meters in diameter and 7 meters high and contains 100 tons of sand. On average, the British household uses 1,000 kWh of gas and 240 kWh of electricity per month. Polar Night Energy provides a future battery that is 20 meters wide and 10 meters high. They can also use materials such as sand or alternative sand rejected by the construction industry.
